Makeup Air: Mechanisms and Benefits Explained

What is Makeup Air?

True to its name, makeup air is created to replenish the air in your interior area that has been taken out by process exhaust fans. It refers to the fresh outdoor air introduced into a building to substitute for air that has been removed or contaminated.

In commercial restoration, it balances the environment during intense ventilation by offsetting polluted air extraction. For optimal indoor air quality and occupant health, makeup air is essential in buildings with demanding ventilation needs.

The Hidden Pitfalls of Negative Air in Your Building

When a building lacks makeup air, exhaust systems create a vacuum effect, drawing in air through any available opening - cracks, doors, or windows. This unintended airflow is inefficient and ineffective. The resulting negative pressure hinders ventilation and exhaust performance, leading to poor indoor air quality.

Negative air pressure leads to poor indoor air quality, characterized by a visible haze of contaminants. This unhealthy environment poses risks to occupant health, safety, and productivity. Unstable temperature and humidity distribution cause discomfort, energy waste, and potential equipment damage.

Building Problems Linked to Negative Pressure

Make-up Air to the Rescue: Mitigating Industry-wide Problems

Make-up air systems offer a superior solution for industrial and commercial spaces. By introducing fresh air and removing pollutants, they significantly enhance occupant comfort and well-being while maintaining energy efficiency.

• Health and Safety: Smoke and water damage can introduce harmful contaminants into the air, posing health risks to occupants and restoration workers. Makeup air dilutes these contaminants, improving indoor air quality.

• Odour Control: By replacing contaminated air with fresh air, makeup air helps to eliminate unpleasant odors caused by smoke, water damage, or mould.

• Drying Process: In water damage restoration, makeup air helps to accelerate the drying process by providing a continuous supply of fresh air to the affected areas.

• Equipment Efficiency: Many restoration equipment, such as air scrubbers and dehumidifiers, require makeup air to operate effectively.

• Building Pressure: Maintaining proper air pressure is crucial for preventing back-drafting and ensuring the safe operation of heating and cooling systems.

How Makeup-Air System Works

The makeup air system typically involves:

1. Air Intake: Fresh air is drawn from outside the building.

2. Filtration: Air is filtered to remove contaminants before entering the building.

3. Heating or Cooling: Depending on the climate, the air may be heated or cooled to maintain comfortable indoor conditions.

4. Distribution: The conditioned air is distributed throughout the building using ductwork or other delivery systems.
